Safe Amalgam Removal in Denver, CO
Our office follows the SMART protocol developed by the IAOMT (International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology) to protect our patients, staff, and environment from the risks posed by haphazard removal of mercury-based dental amalgam fillings.
Patient Protection
- Pre and post-op chlorella and activated charcoal administration: oral administration of detoxification and binding agents acts as a preventive measure against any transient exposure of mercury vapor or particles. Chlorella is a natural heavy metal chelating agent and charcoal is a natural binding agent and detoxifier.
- Full face draping and rubber dam isolation of teeth: facial draping and non-latex rubber dam isolation are physical barriers to prevent physical contact of mercury particles with intra-oral tissues, face, and swallowing of any debris.
- Oxygen delivery through sealed nasal mask: oxygen is delivered through a sealed nasal oxygen mask to prevent inhalation of mercury vapor created during removal of dental amalgam.
Provider Protection
- Face shield: Physical barrier protects the eyes and facial skin.
- Respirators: Special filtration cartridges absorb mercury vapor from the air, preventing inhalation.
Environmental Protection
- IQ Air in-room mercury vapor filtration: high volume suction and air filtration positioned adjacent to patient’s face captures and filters out mercury vapor from dental aerosols. This greatly reduces airborne mercury vapor and oral pathogens from being recirculated through office air.
- Mercury clean-up wipes: wipes are specially designed to bind and remove mercury particles from dental chairs, lights, counter tops, etc.
